about
All are welcome, but this one is especially dedicated to the ladies. Know your worth, know your power, claim your crown, and never lower your standards for anyone.
I know I shouldn't really try to explain my music too much, but this is something I truly want to share and would enjoy doing so regardless. Here is a brief explanation of the history of chess and what it means to me and the making of this song:
Chess is one of my favorite board games, and I've always loved how the queen is the most powerful chess piece. The queen piece was not always known as the "queen" though, she was originally known as the "minister/advisor" and she was also one of the weakest pieces. The rise of the queen piece is deeply connected with the rise of female monarchs in Europe, that is how she came to be and I love that. Being a woman myself, I found that to be empowering. I intended this song to convey the same fierceness & fearlessness the queen piece portrays.
Though there are many variations of chess today, the widely accepted theory is that the earliest forms of chess originated from India. Then it traveled around and was changed over the centuries primarily by the Persians, Arabs, Chinese (singly), and then finally, the Europeans. So I combined elements from each of these ethnicities, from choice of instruments and sounds, to choice of melodies and arrangement, etc. Some either more subtle or prominent than the others, but still forming a combination of all of the above.
I actually started this idea nearly five years ago, it was supposed to be a competitive (for fun) response track to the song "I am the King" by James Meyers. When I first heard that song, I really enjoyed it, but I immediately thought of chess and wanted to make my "move" next. However, being unhappy with my own work at the time, I abandoned the idea for a while. Just last year, I came across the project again and it reignited my inspiration to finish it, so I gave it a whole new makeover. Thus becoming what it is now.
I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I did making it. And remember, any pawn can become a queen too :) For those who may be unfamiliar with chess, a pawn is the weakest chess piece.
